Marine Lance Cpl. David R. Baker, 22, of Painesville, Ohio; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.; died Oct. 20 while supporting combat operations in Nawa district, Afghanistan.
Funeral services for Lance Corporal David Raymond Baker, 22, a lifelong resident of Painesville Township, will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church, 508 Mentor Ave., Painesville.
David passed away Oct. 20, 2009, in Helmand Province of southern Afghanistan.
He was born Oct. 1, 1987, in Painesville.
Lance Corporal David Raymond Baker was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, serving as a 81mm mortar man for the Weapons Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, where he also served as a point man on his first tour in Afghanistan.
He was a 2006 graduate of Riverside High School, where he played on the baseball team. He was a man of faith who loved his family, friends and country. He also enjoyed tubing on the boat, camping, country music, especially the song "Chicken Fried," by Zac Brown. He frequently traveled with his brother to the family cabin up north. He loved dogs, especially "Tootsie."
The family would like to thank the entire community and the Marine Corps for their support and outpouring of love they have shown.
Survivors are his mother, Laurie (Karl "Bob") Lewkowski; father, Mark C. (Rebecca) Baker; brother, Mark D. Baker; twin sisters, Lauren and Taylor Genovese; grandparents, James and Marlene Baker, Steve and Brenda Gyure, Karl and Toni Lewkowski and Don and Donna Kohls; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at Monreal Funeral Home, 35400 Curtis Blvd., Eastlake. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va.
