Made during the silent movie era, "The Passion of Joan of Arc" was voted the 9th best film ever made by film critics and 37th by film directors. "The Word" received the Grand Prize at the Venice Film Festival. Born out-of-wedlock, he spent the first two years of his life in an orphanage. After being adopted, he described his life as happy. He was a pianist, a clerk, a journalist, and a theatre critic before entering the film industry in 1913. In 1919 he made his first film in Denmark before going to France to study the film industry, and where "Passion of Joan of Arc" was made. By 1932, he had returned to Denmark.
