Actor. He was best known for his role of Jules Maigret in the French TV series "Maigret", from 1991 to 2005. He attended the Paris Conservatory and initially began his acting career in theater, performing in the plays "An Ideal Husband" and had a starring part as Thomas Beckett in "Beckett", before moving onto motion pictures during the late 1950s. He became identifiable to international audiences for his roles in the Rene Clement picture "Is Paris Burning?" (1966) and the William Friedkin film "Sorcerer" (1977).
