He married Margarete of Parma, an illegitimate daughter of Emperor Charles V in 1536 but remained with his mistress Taddea Malaspina who had previously born him his two only children. Alessandro was murdered a few months after his wedding by a distant cousin, Lorenzino de Medici. He was the last regent of Florence from the senior branch of the Medici and was succeeded by Cosimo I.
