The Wakefield News, Dec 3, 1908, Pg. 1
Obituary:
John Nicholas Backes was born Nov. 11, 1820 in Germany. He spent his young manhood in his native land. He was married in 1851 to Miss Catherine Philepy. They moved to America in the spring of 1854, making their home in several of the Eastern states before coming to Kansas in 1878. Since coming to this state he has made his home continuously on his farm southwest of town, where he died Nov. 27, 1908.

He was a staunch and faithful worker in the Catholic Church all his life. He gave a part of his home to be used for the services and gathered together a congregation that for eighteen years met with him in his home until five years ago, when the church was built near his farm. He leaves a wife, three sons and five daughters, to mourn the death of a loving husband and father. The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the house and the church. Father Collerand of Clay Center officiated. The remains were laid to rest in the new cemetery at Wakefield.
