John Backes was born at Farming, Minnesota, December 10, 1872, the 3rd child of Peter and Anna Marie (Bock) Backes. He married Gertrude Willenbring May 18, 1897, at Farming. The family came to North Dakota in 1902. They homesteaded near Foxholm and raised their 8 children. He farmed there until 1945 when he retired to Minot. Two and a half years before his death, he moved to Harvey where his sons, Al and George, lived. Funeral services were held at St. Henry's Catholic Church, rural Foxholm.
