WINFREE FARMER - LaGrange has always been Mrs. Farmer's home although she had lived elsewhere temporarily for a few years. She was the daughter of Dr. Wm. E. Ellery and Catherine La Fon Ellery. Her father, a member of an old Massachusetts family, came to LaGrange in 1845 where he practiced medicine until his death in 1858. Her grandfather, John La Fon migrated from Virginia to Lewis Co. in 1830 bringing his family and several slaves. He was the second permanent white settler in Lewis County. John La Fon was a member of the first county court of Lewis County, and built the first brick house in the County. It is still being occupied.
Mrs. Farmer was a devout Christian, a member of the Baptist church. Her interests were he family, her friends, her church and the D.A.R. She loved people. She was respected and held in high esteem by all who knew her.
In 1878 Mrs. Farmer married Jno. G. Farmer, well known citizen of this county, who died in 1915. Five children were born to this union. Three daughters preceded her in death, Ethel, Mary Sue and Mabel. She is survived by two sons, Col. Ellery Farmer, U.S. Army Retired, and John G. Farmer III, of Vermillion, S.D., and by six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one nephew, Dr. W. L. Ellery of LaGrange and one niece, Mrs. Grace Ellery O'Neal of Palmyra and by seven grand nephews and nieces.
