ELLERY CENTENNIAL
The year 1945 is of especial significance to Dr. Wm. L. Ellery. It is the 100th anniversary of the year in which his grandfather began the practice of medicine in LaGrange. It also rounds out a century of the time over which the Doctors William Ellery of three generations have devoted their lives to the ministry of healing in this community.
There may be other instances in which a physician, his son and his grandson have practiced medicine in the same community over a 100-year period, but such instances must be rare indeed.
Dr. Ellery's grandfather, Dr William E. Ellery, born in Maryland, was graduated in medicine from the University of Maryland in 1844. His diploma hangs in Dr. Ellery's office. He came to LaGrange in 1850 and practiced here until his untimely death in August 1857 at the age of about 40 years.
His son, Dr. Wm. Ellery, born in LaGrange, was graduated in 1877 from Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia. He returned to his native town and practiced here until as late as April 1934. His death occurred in January 1935.
His son, Dr. W. L. Ellery, born in LaGrange, was graduated from Washington University medical school, St. Louis, in 1906. He has practiced here continuously since that time with the exception of two years, 1917-1919, during the First World War, when he was associated in practice with Dr. Selden Spencer in St. Louis during the absence of the latter's associate who was serving as a physician in the army.
The careers of the three Drs. Ellery have paralleled each other in certain respects. Each stuck to his practice through hard times as well as good and under favorable as well as difficult conditions; each spent in this community the money he had made here and each built a home here.
The first Dr. Ellery married a girl he was called to attend as a typhoid patient – Miss Lucy Catherine LaFon. She was the daughter of John LaFon who came here from Virginia with his family in 1830 and built the first brick house constructed in Lewis County, family tradition asserts, on what was known in recent years as the John Muehe place, now owned by John Frieden, five miles west of LaGrange. Dr. W. L. Ellery now owns a 310-acre farm which adjoins the farm owned by his great-grandfather, John LaFon. Incidentally when the latter retired and moved to LaGrange, he built and occupied the brick residence now owned by Mrs. W. C. Porter.
The first Dr. Ellery erected for an office a building on the corner of Fifth and Jackson streets, in recent years remodeled and now owned and occupied by Mrs. Zula Roberts. On an adjoining lot he built the ell of his residence, intending to complete it with a larger, main structure in front, but death intervened before he began this addition. The ell, which it is thought he completed and was occupying at the time of his death, is now the property and home of Mrs. Louanna Admire and daughter.
