The son of Thomas & Mary Ann (Reeder) Anderson, in 1860 he was a laborer living in Jackson Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 8" tall and had brown hair and brown eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-two at New Germantown, Toboyne Township, Perry County, September 4, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Camp Cameron in Washington DC October 11 as a private with Co. C, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry (92nd Pennsylvania). He re-enlisted as Veteran Volunteer January 1, 1864, at Cleveland, Tennessee, and honorably discharged with his company July 18, 1865.
