Jack Johnston was born March 24, 1937, in Glenburn, to Andrew and Alice (Cooper) Johnston. He died at the age of 75 on Jan. 4, 2013, at a Bismarck hospital. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 31, at Bismarck Baptist Church, 2211 LaForest Ave., Bismarck, with lunch following at the church. A private interment has already been held at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan.
Jack was raised in Glenburn and graduated from Glenburn High School with the class of 1955. He married Suellen O'Connell in 1962. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on July 1, 2012.
Jack attended Minot State prior to serving his country in the U.S. Army. He owned Johnston's Jack & Jill in Glenburn before joining Coca-Cola Bottling in Minot, where he was affectionately known by many as "Coca-Cola Jack." Following a career with Coke, he became a greeter at Wal-Mart, where he took great joy in welcoming customers, especially the children. An avid sports fan, Jack was partial to purple and gold. His teams were the Glenburn Panthers, LA Lakers and Minnesota Vikings.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Suellen, Bismarck; his daughter, Jill (Glen) Stevens, Fargo; his son, Mark (Margaret) Johnston, New Salem; six grandchildren, Rachel, Luke, Anna, Adam, Joshua and Jacob; his mother-in-law, Vivian O'Connell; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Judy Johnston (Dean) Lonning, Dan (Avis) O'Connell, Ken (Kathy) O'Connell, Kathy (Mike) O'Keeffe, Colleen Sand, Pat (Rick) Rasnick, Joni (Nick) Kleven, and Jim (LaVonne) O'Connell; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Del and Edo; his father-in-law, Arthur O'Connell; his sisters-in-law, Opal Johnston and Ora Thompson; his brother-in-law, Randy Sand; his niece, Rebecca (Sand) Wilson; and nephew, Scott Johnston.
