Memorial services for Austin Haugen, age 41, of Lemmon, SD, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 2, 2013, at the Calvary Lutheran Church in Lemmon, SD with Pastor Ryan Nordlund, officiating.
Austin Allen Haugen was born in Hettinger, ND, on November 16, 1971, to Melvin and Loretta (Warne) Haugen. He grew up in the White Butte area, attended school in Lemmon and graduated in 1991 from Lemmon High School. During the summers while still in high school, he began working with his dad at the Grand River Grazing Association and continued to work there full time for several years after graduation.
Austin pursued many different avenues over the following years including working for OK Tire and Racer Performance in Bismarck, ND and operating two of his own businesses, Big Boys Welding & Auto Body in Lemmon and Old Iron Repair in Mandan, ND. In the spring of 2012 he returned to Lemmon where he worked at Southwest Grain and continued to mechanic on the side.
Austin was a "teddy bear" and had many good friends he accumulated over the years, including neighbors, co-workers and those he met while pursuing his passion of racing.
He was a loving father to his four children, and cherished his time spent with them. He gained new found joy this past summer as he took them fishing, something they all enjoyed. Austin also enjoyed music, welding, drag racing, demolition derbies, racing modified stock cars and anything with an engine.
Austin tragically took his own life on September 29, 2013 southwest of Lemmon, SD.
He is survived by his parents, Melvin and Loretta Haugen, White Butte, SD; one son, Zachary Robert Haugen, New Rockford, ND; three daughters, Rebecca Ann and Kristina Lee Haugen, New Rockford, ND and Daytona Bree Haugen, Dickinson, ND; two sisters, Nancy (Ridge) Baumeister, Bismarck, ND, Nadine (Doug) Glur, Bismarck, ND; one niece, Ashley (Walker) Sabin; one nephew, Hunter Glur; one aunt, Benita (Bob) Schackow; one uncle, Ed Haugen; and 7 cousins, Mark Schackow, Debbie Taicher, Doug Schackow, David Haugen, Kristie Goff, Anita Rose and Duane Haugen.
Austin was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents.
Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.
