Joseph Applegate was 5 ft., 5 inches tall with light hair and blue eyes when he enrolled in Co E at age 25. He was married shortly after leaving the service of 9 months to Annie Murphy on 13 August 1863 at Pemberton, NJ. After his military service he lived in Camden, NJ. They had at least 3 children: Franklin, Elizabeth, and Wallace. Joseph died on 21 Novenber 1890 at age 53 leaving a widow and three children under 13. Joseph enlisted with his uncle Allen Applegate and two cousins, Samuel Applegate and William H. Applegate. He was enrolled in the 23rd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on August 26, 1862 and was mustered in as a Private into Company E on September 13, 1862. He served through the December 1862 Frederickburg Campaign and the May 1863 Chancellorville Campaign before being honorably mustered out with his regiment on June 27, 1863.
Joseph and Anna Applegate had children: Laura Applegate 1864-____, Henry A. Applegate 1867-1944, Martha M. Applegate 1874-____, Frank Applegate 1877-____, Elizabeth Applegate 1879-____, Wallace Applegate 1882-1928.
