Mr. John Dwight "Jack" McCarthy, 85, of 9078 Meadowbrook Drive, Waynesboro, PA entered into eternal rest at 9:01 A.M. Monday, August 24, 2009 in his home with his family beside him, following a long illness.

He was born on August 3, 1924 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; he was the son of the late, Mabel Inez (Brown) McCarthy Breene and Daniel J. McCarthy.

Mr. McCarthy attended Castle Heights Military Academy in Lebanon, TN and graduated from Classen High School in Oklahoma City with the class of 1942. He then received his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Oklahoma in Norman, OK.

He served in the United States Navy during World War II, serving state side and then served in the Pacific Theater.

He and his wife of over 61 years, Mrs. Doris Louise (Knepper) McCarthy, were married June 1948. They moved to the present residence in 1963.

Following his discharge from the military in 1946, he took sales courses at Frick Company in Waynesboro, and then the company transferred him to the branch office in St. Louis, Missouri. Then in 1957 he went to work for E.I. DuPont in Willington, Delaware in the engineering department, and then returned to Frick Company in the engineering department in January 1961. Mr. McCarthy retired in November 1995.

Mr. McCarthy was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, Waynesboro where he served in the church consistory. He was a life member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Condition Engineering Inc. He also was a member of Acacia Lodge #586 Free and Accepted Masons of Waynesboro; Lodge Council Chapter Consistory Valley of Harrisburg; Zembo Shrine, A.A.O.N.M.S. of Harrisburg; South Penn Scottish Rite Club; Franklin County Shrine Club; played the bag pipes for the Zembo Highlanders; B.P.O. Elks Lodge #731; Joe Stickell American Legion Post #15 and the national AARP. He was a former member and charter member of the Pen Mar Dance Club of Waynesboro, member of the 9&90 Dance Club of Hagerstown, MD, and a registrar Professional Engineer in Pennsylvania.

Mr. McCarthy enjoyed playing the bag pipes; he coached wrestling at the Waynesboro Y.M.C.A. prior to high school wrestling, participant of the Martial Arts, Tai-Chi-Chuan and Ba-Gua until his mid 70's.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Dr. John Brian (wife Dr. Shilpa) McCarthy of New York City, NY, one grandson, Devan B. McCarthy, and four nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a step-mother, Cleo McCarthy, step-father, Frank M. Breene, Sr. and step-brother, Frank M. Breene, Jr.

Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, August 27, 2009 in Trinity United Church of Christ, 30 West North Street, Waynesboro with Rev. Sue D-Heedene officiating. Masonic memorial services will start at 2:00 P.M. in the church by his lodge. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.
