Pfc. Avery of Colorado Springs, Colo., graduated from Coronado High School in 2005. He was serving as a Military Police Officer with plans on becoming a cop after his enlistment was up. Avery had received several awards and decorations during his time in the Army, including the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Combat Action Badge, and the Driver and Mechanic Badge. He died in Muqudadiyah from wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated during checkpoint operations at age 19.
