Crusader, Prince of Galilee and Tiberias, Regent of Antioch and Edessa. Grandson of Robert Guiscard. Accompanied his uncle Bohemond of Tarent on the Crusade. He captured Tarsus in 1097 and helped in the siege of Antioch one year later. In July 1097 he was the first of the Crusaders to enter the Temple Area of Jerusalem. He raided the Al-Aqsa Mosque and sold imprisoned Muslims and Jews into slavery. Bohemond was taken prisoner in 1100 and Tancred became regent of Antioch. Bohemond was finally released but soon went to Europe to gather an army and he again became regent of Antioch. In 1104 he also became regent of the County of Edessa after Baldwin I. had been taken prisoner and was therefor the most powerful man in Syria. In 1103 he married Cécile of France, daughter of King Philipp I. He relucantly gave Edessa back to Baldwin I. of Boulogne in 1108. After Bohemonds death in 1111 he was again able to become regent of Antioch for Bohemonds young son.
