Robert Oren Poole served in CO. H, 38th Ohio Veteran Volunteer Infantry and was in Gen. Sherman's army during the 'March to the Sea'. Along with others (including his brother, Almon), he went by ox cart to Kalkaska Co. Michigan, where on July 20, 1879 he married his first wife, Flora Rickard (Rickerd?). They had two known children; Fred Poole (born 1880), and a child who died in infancy. In his published obituary, it states that he returned to Williams Co. in 1884. Although no record has been found, Flora reported died about 1900. He married the widow Minerva (Rouse) Smith in Williams Co. on March 31, 1903. In his later years he served as Adjutant of the Hiram Louden Post No. 155, Grand Army of the Republic at Montpelier Ohio. His monument was provided by the Hiram Louden Post, G.A.R.
