Originally served as a Private with Company G, 15th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry from 19 April 1861 - 28 August 1861. Reenlisted as a Private with Company H, 55th Regiment on 25 September 1861. Promoted to Second Lieutenant on October 24, 1861. Promoted to First Lieutenant and Adjutant with Field and Staff on October 3, 1862. Promoted to Captain and transferred to Company A on August 1, 1863. Resigned his commission on 29 August 1864.
