Enlisted Aug. 9, 1862, as 4th Corporal in CO A of what became the 36th Iowa Infantry Regiment. Reported to Camp Lincoln, Keokuk Iowa 9 September 1862 where the regiment was organized. Mustered into US service October 4, 1862
The regiment was assigned first to the 13th Division, XIII Army Corps commanded by General Leonard Ross, and took part in the Yazoo Pass / Fort Pemberton Expedition, Feb-March 1863, after which the 13th Division became the garrison defense force at Helena, AR. Following the Battle of Helena on July 4th 1863, the regiment became part of the 1st Brigade / 3rd Division of the Army Expeditionary Force under Major General Fred Steele that captured Little Rock on Sep 10, 1863. Steele's Little Rock Expeditionary Force was re-designated the VII Army Corps in January 1864. On March 23rd 1864, the VII Army Corps departed on the Camden expedition and took part in battles at Elkins' Ford, Apr 3-4; Prairie D'Ane, Apr 7-8; the capture of Camden Apr 10-12, the Battle of Marks' Mills, Apr. 25, and the Battle of Jenkins' Ferry, Apr 29-30. Then-Corporal Hittle was taken prisoner of war at Marks' Mills, AR, 25 April 1864. Along with 9 other comrades from Company A, he escaped & returned to VII Corps lines then encamped at Princeton. AR. Two days later these escapees and other members of the 36th not engaged at Marks Mills took part in the Battle of Jenkin's Ferry during Steele's retreat to Little Rock. The regiment carried out guard and escort duties at Little Rock, DeValls Bluff, Pine Bluff and St. Charles for the remainder of the war, and was mustered out of federal service at DeValls Bluff on 24 Aug 1865. The 36th was transported to Davenport Iowa where the 36th was disbanded.

After the war, Michael Hittle was a tenant farmer in Monroe County Iowa where he and his spouse Deborah (Barnard) Hittle had a large family of 7 children, 4 of whom survived to adulthood: Clara, Thomas, Andrew and Newton Albert Hittle. In 1879 Michael made a trip to Kansas and Colorado in search of homestead land. He then came to Good Hope, northwest of Castana, Monroe County, Iowa where he purchased 240 acres where he was engaged in stock raising. He expanded his holdings to 306 acres. His health was affected by disease and sickness contracted in the service. He died suddenly of an apparent heart attack on March 21, 1900 on his farm at Good Hope. He was survived by his father, wife and three children, Clara Hittle McGee, Thomas Jefferson Hittle and Andrew Michael Hittle. Son Newton Albert Hittle died of malaria in Kansas in 1899.
