JOHN GIVENS
---In the passing of John Givens, La Plata and Macon County loses one of its most highly esteemed citizens, a man that was a friend to every unfortunate, to every one in need; he was the first to reach a bed side and was beautifully known as the most philantropic man in our community. He would give his all to a person or friend. This in brief was the fundamentals of the life of John Givens.
---He was the son of Alexander and Eliza Givens who moved to Cooper County Missouri from Kentucky a few months before the birth of the deceased who was born at Boonville on February 14, 1846.
---In his younger days he took and interest in the futhering and the development of fine stick, especially saddle horses. At the time of his death he had several fine cups, trophies that his horses had won while under his training.
---After leaving Cooper County, where he live for forty years, he came with his family to Macon County where he engaged in the cement business, later taking up with the oil industries. With this he was active in several states. later he served as deputy sheriff of Macon County for three terms after which he was marshall of La Plata.
---He was married on November 8, 1864 to Martha E. Chambers and to them were born eight children, five of whom have preceded him in death. The living are Harry F. of Colorado, Wallace R. of Mobile, Alabama and Nora Louise Miles of Iowa City, Iowa. There is also a grandson, Nelson A. Miles.
---He united with the Presbyterian Church where he held his membership at the time of his death.
---Mr. Givens had not been well for the last six or seven years, but only during the last month was his condition considered critical. He grew steadily worse until Thursday evening, last, and died at about 10:30. He would have been seventy-seven his next birthday.
---Besides his immediate relatives, he leaves his wife, a loyal and faithful life companion besides a large circle of friends, for to know John Given was to love him.
---Funeral services were held from the home last Saturday at 3 p.m., conducted by his pastor, Rev. E.E. DeLong, after which interment was made at the La Plata cemetery.
