Obituary, Times Argus (Barre, VT), 15 Nov 2005:

Barre Town, VT. Carole G. Bernasconi, 68, passed away Sunday, Nov. 13, 2005, in the peaceful surroundings of her home on Wildersburg Common after an eight month battle with pancreatic cancer.

Carole was born on April 29, 1937, in Barre, the daughter of the late Charles Griffin and M. Maxine (Villas) Griffin. She graduated from Spaulding High School in Barre in 1955, whose class just celebrated their 50 year reunion. In 1957, she graduated from Vermont College in Montpelier.

She was married in 1959 to John E. Bernasconi in Barre where they have spent their lives together.

Prior to marriage and until the birth of her children, Carole was employed at the Heaton Hospital in Montpelier in the pathology department. She was, above all, a loving homemaker with a gift of making her surroundings warm, comfortable, and welcoming. She had a tremendous pride in the accomplishments of her three children. Friendship graced her relationships with her children as they grew into adulthood.

By far the greatest joys of Carole's life were her five grandchildren: Jason Bernasconi, Stacey Shapiro, Talia Shapiro, Robert John "RJ" Aughey, and Ryan Aughey. They have known absolute devotion and unconditional love by their Grammy, also known as "MeMe".

In addition to her husband, mother, and grandchildren, survivors include a son, Jay Bernasconi of Barre; two daughters, Jayne Bernasconi and her husband, Paul Shapiro of Baltimore, Md., and Jan Bernasconi and her husband, Robert Aughey of Stowe; three sisters, Joyce St. Francis of Burlington, Claire Simmonds of Pompano Beach, Fla., and Barbara "Bobsey" McGoff and her husband, Richard Wilson of Colchester, Conn.; a brother, Charles "Skip" Griffin and his wife, Pamila of Oceanside, Calif.

Her funeral service will be held on Thursday, Nov. 17, 2005, at 11 a.m. in the Church of the Good Shepherd (Episcopal) in Barre. Friends may call at the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre on Wednesday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Carole's memory may be made to the Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice, 600 Granger Road, Barre, VT 05641, or to the Pancreatic Cancer Research Society, PANCAN, 2141 Rosecran Avenue, Suite 7000, El Segundo, CA 90245.
