Actor. He acted during the 1930s and 1940s in both theatre, movies, and TV. His best known film is "...reitet fŸr Deutschland." Because he made some Nationalist propaganda films, he was partially band from the industry in 1945. His first roll after WWII was 1947 in the 1947 film "Zwischen gestern und morgen." By the 1950s he was one of the most active actors in Germany. In 1961 he won the Bambi Award and the "Deutschen Filmpreis," in 1966 he won the "Filmband in Gold," and in 1972 the "Grillparzer-Ring" from the city of Vienna.

Willy was the first born child of goldsmith Johann Heinrich Birgel and his wife Henriette, (nee Dreyers) and he had 5 siblings. He was married twice. 1913 he married a fellow actress, Carola Cajetan, who he met while working at the "Bonner Stadttheater." In 1914, they had a son, George, who died 1967. After their divorce in 1940, he married in the same year to actress Charlotte Michael, with whom he had a daughter, Christine, in 1942. This union also ended in divorce in 1968.
