Elizabeth Clay was born Mary Elizabeth Swepson, daughter of Richard Swepson, on 9 June 1747 (prob. in Amelia Co., VA). She first married to Benjamin Whitehead on 31 March 1761, which is the date on their Lunenburg County Marriage Bond. She married second to Rev. Eleazer Clay on 10 January 1788 in Mecklenburg Co., VA.

Children from her marriage to Benjamin Whitehead: (1) Richard Whitehead, (2) Jane Whitehead [who married Richard Jeffries, (3)Sarah Whitehead [who married James Coleman], (4) Elizabeth Whitehead [who married Clark Taylor], (5) William Whitehead, (6)Nancy Whitehead [who married John Gayle], (7)Mary "Polly" Whitehead [who married John Greening, (8) Swepson Whitehead, and (9)Susannah Whitehead
