Departed this life, at his residence, in the county of Chesterfield on the 10th day of October last, in the 74th year of his age; after a painful protracted illness of several months, Mr. HENRY TURPIN, leaving behind him a wife and six children, to mourn their irreparable loss.
In the death of Mr. Turpin, there is a chasm made, says one of his old and intimate neighbors, "that will never be filled during my time upon earth. I have known him long, and can say I never knew a better man, take him all in all. --In all his relations with the people of this world, his conduct was of the first order. He was a great neighbor, a kind and affectionate husband and father, a master who was indulgent to a fault, and died, as I believe, a good Christian."
Mr. Turpin was truly a man, who made it a principle, not to consider his own good alone, but the good of his neighbors; being a man by nature, of quick and hasty disposition, he would sometimes, when petitioned for a favor, reply, it is almost impossible for me to comply, but when his better feelings would take place, he would give the desired aid.
It seems Providence had ordered that the noblest dispositions of his soul should be reserved for the last conflict. It was the writer's privilege to visit him frequently during his last illness, and truly can he say, that he always found him submissive to the will of his heavenly Father; for he would frequently say, when conversing about his affliction, I gave myself into the hands of the Lord, in the onset of my sickness, and I feel disposed for his will to be done. Although, he sometimes gave way to feelings of disquietude, it seemed that had a tendency to increase his resignation; for after expressing some surprise and irritation at the lingering nature of his disease, he would seem to mourn over his folly and betake to self-abasement. Mr. Turpin had professed conversion for several years, but it seems he could not take courage enough to submit to the ordinance of baptism, until the close of his sojourn upon earth, when he expressed great solicitude to submit to that ordinance; had upon being informed by one of his devoted daughters, he was too ill to submit to it; at that time he expressed resignation, and said nothing further about it. Although Mr. Turpin was not a member of the church, yet may our church say, she has lost a valuable and useful friend; for his heart and purse were always open to the pecuniary necessities of the church, --never was there a call for aid, but that it was rendered by him freely and liberally --and his seat was always filled when not kept away by indisposition, but his seat is left vacant, and will not be filled soon by a superior.
Thus died old Mr. Turpin, leaving behind him what is better far than riches; "a good name."
