REV. JOHN T. AMBRE Gary, Indiana Rev. John T. Ambre, age 57, Pastor of St. Mark Parish in Gary, Indiana, went home to be with God on Monday, October 16, 2006, at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. He was survived by his mother, Mary Ambre of Griffith, IN; two brothers, Mark Ambre of Fishers, IN and Leo (Evelyn) Ambre of Las Vegas, NV and two sisters, Jeanne Ambre, S.S.C.M. of Danville, PA and Marie (Peter) Dombrowski of Cudahy, WI, as well as six nieces and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Ambre. Father John was taken to St. Mark Church on Friday, October 20, 2006 from 2-8 p.m. with a Vespers service at 7 p.m. Viewing at Holy Angels Cathedral began at 9 a.m. on Saturday, October 21, 2006 preceding the Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Morning Prayer was prayed at 9:30 a.m. Father John's body was interred at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens in Schererville. After the burial to honor one of Father John's favorite meals, a potluck dinner was held in Holy Angels Parish Hall. Over the course of his priestly ministry, Father John served at parishes in Hammond, Highland, Whiting, Griffith and Valparaiso, and was Pastor of St. Patrick Parish in East Chicago and St. Mark Parish in Gary. He taught at Bishop Noll Institute from 1975 to 1985. Father John was born on December 2, 1948 in Gary, IN, Father John was the son of Mary (Carlson) and Thomas Ambre. He attended Holy Angels Grade School and Andrean High School and entered St. Gregory Seminary in Cincinnati for two years. He studied philosophy and theology at the Canisianum in Innsbruck, Austria for 6 years. He was ordained a deacon in Austria in 1974 and a priest on October 4, 1975, in Gary, IN. Father John's passion for social justice was exercised in his participation in the Calumet Project and in socially responsible investments. He indulged his love for NSU and BMW motorcycles with the NWI BMW Club, in which he served as chaplain. He also belonged to the Isetta Owner's Club. Frequently, Father John visited family and friends in Germany and Austria. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mark Church.
