Known by his middle name, Rev. Dr. Clayton Bell was born in Tsinkanpsu (now Jiangjing), China to his Missionary Parents, Dr. L. Nelson and Mrs. Virginia L. Bell. He was named for Benjamin Clayton, long time supporter from Texas of the Missionary Hospital where his Father was the director and chief surgeon.
His family returned to the United States during the evacuation of missionaries from China prior to World War II.
Clayton Bell attended Wheaton College in Illinois and was a graduate of Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia. He was a Pastor in Alabama and Georgia before he assumed leadership of the Highland Park Presbyterian Church in Dallas, Texas. He was the chairman of the board for Christianity Today which was founded by his father and the Rev. Billy Graham, his brother in law. While at Highland Park Presbyterian Church he became embroiled in the debate of joining the Presbyterian Church USA or leaving the denomination. This placed great strain on his life. Highland Park would eventually become the third largest Presbyterian Church in the United States.
