WILLIAM R. BRILES

William R. Briles, eldest son of Louis and Martha Briles, was born near Corydon, Indiana, Sept. 13, 1870 and passed away at Yocom hospital March 18, 1951, at the age of 80 years, six months and three days.

The family moved to Chariton in 1881. There were four children; a sister died in infancy, William R., a sister, Mrs. Mary B. Eastman, and a brother, Emmett, who passed away seven years ago.

He became a registered pharmacist at the age of 18 years, working for Dr. W. H. Gibbon, who took special interest in him. After Dr. Gibbon passed away he managed the store for the doctor's wife, Mrs. Gibbon, and served for several years. Then he went to Melrose and managed a store for the late Dr. Riordan for several years.

In 1910, he and E. S. Jones, formed a partnership of Jones and Briles, which lasted for 15 years. He built his home northwest of Chariton, where he has lived alone since the death of his wife, who passed away about 14 years ago.

The only survivors of the family are his son Emmett, of Chino, California, and the sister, Mrs. Mary B. Eastman. Billy Briles, as he was known by a host of friends was very quiet and unassuming, and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Services were held at the Beardsley funeral home Wednesday, March 21, at 2:30. The Rev. W. L. Peters officiated and burial was made at the Chariton cemetery.
