Zara M. Lanning, age at time of death 19, Residence Clarke Co., Iowa. Born 1840 NY, Enlisted July 1, 1861. Wounded April 6, 1862 Shiloh, TN, Died of wounds St. Louis, MO.
Matilda, Susan Letitia, Zara, Everett, Ephraim and Sarah Eleanor were children born to Martin and Olive Judith Mosher Lanning. Olive always, by records went by Judith versus Olive.
Martin was the son of Edward and Eleanor VanHorn Lanning of Steuben Co NY.
Martin died abt 1850, Judith never remarried.
Zara by 1860 had moved to Clarke Co IA, it is unknown if there was family to draw him there, as his mother hadn't moved there until 1880, long after Zara had died in St. Louis MO from a gunshot wound received at the Battle of Shiloh while serving in the Civil War. Note his unit above.
He joins many other family member ancestors that took up arms.
