Clerk, born at Kingswingford, Staffordshire, England he was the eldest child and son of Elizabeth (Radcliff) and John Badley of Townsend. He was educated at Rugby School ((1729) and Trinity College Cambridge (1729-1731), B.A. (his 3x great-nephew John Haden Badley would a century and a half later also matriculate at Rugby and Trinity). He was ordained a Deacon in Lincolnshire (1731) and achieved Litt.dim. He was ordained priest in 1735 in Eccleshall, Staffordshire, and took the post of Curate and Schoolmaster at Hayfield, Glossop in the same year. He married Ann Bower and was the only known minister in this Badley family. Tradition says that he was given the living of the Chapel-en-le-Frith, in Derbyshire by his wife's family. Their eldest daughter Elizabeth was married to Thomas Radcliff and had one son John Badley Radcliff, but predeceased her father. A son John Badley died before the age of ten. The eldest surviving daughter, Sarah Badley was a spinster and received the bulk of her father's estate. Of the two younger daughters. Ann Badley married John Cresswell on 15 August 1762 and Mary married John Bennett, Surgeon on 23 November 1764. These two younger daughters were involved in a lenghty Chancery over the estate of their elder sister. The three youngest children, namely Ellen, a second John and Martha Badley all died young. Both his wife and he preceeded his father in death. One of his grandsons, John Badley Webb was included in his great grandfather's will. He was laid to rest on 27 September 1764 in the parish that he serverd. He is the only child of John Badley of Townsend not buried at Kingswinford. (bio by: David McJonathan-Swarm)
