My grandfather was the first children of my great-grandparents Gustav and Hedwig Kilz. He was baptized in the name Gustav Helmut Kilz.
Helmut grew up with two sisters (Dora & Brigitte) and had four half-siblings (Herbert, Anna, Herta & Richard) from the first marriage of his father.
His half-brother Herbert fell in World War II at Volgograd and in 1948 his second half-brother Richard fell victim to the fall of a conveyor bridge.
Helmut learned the profession of an electrician and work mostly underground.
On August 18, 1951, he married Hilda Behncke and they became parents of a son and two daughters.
In February 1956 son Harald at the age of three died of an ileus.
In August 1957 his father Gustav committed suicide aged 60.
At the beginning of 1960s his health deteriorated. In spring of 1963 a kidney had to be removed. My grandfather passed away late in the evening of September 30, 1965, at the age of 35 years following the effects of Hodgkin's disease.
