Joseph H. Depaepe, 70, of Rock Island, died Saturday, July 20, 2002, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Milan. Burial is in National Cemetery, Arsenal Island, where military honors will be presented by Moline American Legion Post 246. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, where Trio Lodge 57 AF and AM will conduct a Masonic service at 7 p.m. Memorials may be made to Memorial Christian Church, Rock Island, Building Fund.

Mr. Depaepe was born Aug. 4, 1931, in Rock Island, son of C. Joseph and Margaret Holdorf Depaepe. He graduated from Rock Island High School in 1949. Joe married the former Betty Lou Hawkins Jan. 31, 1954, in Dallas, Texas.

Member of the Rock Island Fire Department from 1 Jun 1956 - 10 Aug 1977, retiring as assistant chief in 1977. He also had worked part time at Quad City Engineering, Rock Island.

Joe served four years in the Navy during the Korean conflict. He served as an aviation metal smith and was stationed in Dallas and on the USS Leyte.

He was a member and an elder of Memorial Christian Church, Rock Island, a founding member of the Association of Retired Firefighters of Rock Island and a member of Trio Lodge 57 AF and AM, Rock Island. He enjoyed and loved life, his family, his grandchildren and the camaraderie of the retired firefighters.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Lou; son and daughter-in-law, Joseph M. and Debbie Depaepe, Rock Island; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Tony Padavich, Rock Island; grandchildren, Adrienne Novitske, Jacqlyn Depaepe and Andrew and Sarah Padavich; a great-granddaughter, Dallas Jo Novitske; a brother-in-law and his wife, Tom and Jean Lee, Rock Island; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Margaret Lee.
