Gregory "Greg" Carlson, 55, of Rock Island, passed away peacefully with his family at his side Monday, April 21, 2008, at his residence after a two-year, courageous battle with Lou Gehrig's Disease.

Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Inurnment will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family.

Greg was born April 15, 1953, in Rock Island, the son of Allan E. and Joyce Lindquist Carlson. He married Kathy Schneider March 23, 1973, in Moline.

Greg graduated from Rock Island High School in 1971 and Southern Illinois University with a kindergarten-12 teaching degree and an art degree. He worked at several jobs in the Quad-City area as a technical illustrator before joining the Rock Island Fire Department as a firefighter in 1981. He was a member of the the Rock Island Fire Department from 14 Sep 1981 - 28 Sep 2003.

He was a member of Illinois Association of Fire Fighters, Local No. 26. Greg used his artistic talents in drawing Freddie the Fire Hydrant and the Firefighters Memorial. He will best be remembered for his talent, which amused and delighted all who saw it.

He loved air brush and water-color painting, collecting antique toys along with NASCAR collectables. He loved going to car races and car shows, the outdoors and watching wildlife. There wasn't a day that went by that Greg didn't spend time feeding the birds and animals.

He is survived by his wife, Kathy Carlson, Rock Island; daughters and son-in-law, Michelle and Domonic Turner, Davenport, Melissa Carlson and her friend Josh Spurgetis, Rock Island; grandchildren, Drake Williamson and Natalie Turner; father, Allan Carlson, Rock Island; brothers, Gary Carlson and Grant Carlson, both of Rock Island. He was preceded by his mother and grandparents. The family is grateful for the care and support that Greg and his family received from Linda Cheek and Trinity Pathway Hospice.
