Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Episcopal Church, Rock Island. Burial will be in Chippiannock Cemetery, Rock Island.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island. Memorials may be made to the church.
Mr. Appelquist was born May 10, 1932, in Rock Island, the son of Arthur and Irene Tack Appelquist. He married Valdeyne A. Gathye July 20, 1957, in Bemidji, Minn.
His biological mother was Lillie Appelquist who died shortly after his birth. He was raised with his father Edgar's second wife Irene Appelquist along his three younger half brothers.
He was a firefighter for the city of Rock Island, retiring as a captain in 1980. He was a member of the Rock Island Fire Department from 1 Nov 1965 - 23 Oct 1980. In earlier years he had worked for the Rock Island Lines.
He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War.
Rodney was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church and the Quad City Botanical Center.
He was an avid gardener, growing champion hybrid iris. He also enjoyed reading.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter and son-in-law, Audrey and Ken Kohl, Rock Island; a son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Deborah Appelquist, Milwaukee, Wis.; grandchildren, Sondra Sierens and Travis, Joshua, Anthony and Jason Spurgetis; a great-granddaughter, Kylee Spurgetis; and brothers, Dave Appelquist, Coyne Center, and Gary, Jim and Tom Appelquist, all of Rock Island.
He was preceded in death by a son, Edward "Pepper" Appelquist, in 1961.
