Lt. Claude A. Donaway of the Rock Island Fire Department, 44 years old, World War Veteran and a resident of the city since infancy, died at 11 o'clock this morning in St. Anthony's hospital after an illness of three weeks. He resided at 4711 Twelfth Street, Rock Island.

Mr. Donaway was born Sept. 2, 1891, in Berion County, Michigan. He received his education in the Rock Island schools and joined the Rock Island Fire Department April 11, 1916. Member of the Rock Island Fire Department from 11 Apr 1916 - 13 Nov 1935

He left the department Sept. 19, 1917 to enlist in the United States Army, and served in France 22 months with the 84th base hospital unit, being wardmaster at the close of hostilities. He was discharged June 7, 1919.

Mr. Donaway married Miss Anna Gramentz in Muscatine, Iowa, June 30, 1920. He had rejoined the fire department July 27, 1919, and served at the Central station until two years ago when he was appointed lieutenant of the No. 3 company, where he had since been stationed.

He was the holder of a certificate of merit from the National Safety council for his work in the resuscitation of a Rock Island woman who was overcome May 23, 1931, by carbon monoxide gas.

Mr Donaway was a member of the Evangelical Church of Peace, Rock Island, the Police and Firemen's Insurance association, the Illinois Firemen's association and the Woodmen of the World.

Surviving are the widow; a sister, Mrs. P. J. Heverling of Rock Island, and two brothers, Arthur Donaway of Rock Island and William McGurk of Casper, Wyoming.

The body was removed to the Hodgson & Hoban Mortuary, pending funeral arrangements.
