Richard "Dick" Beane, 84, of Rock Island and Seminole, Fla., died Sunday, June 20, 2010, at Trinity Pathway Hospice, Bettendorf.

Funeral services are 10 a.m. Thursday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island. Burial is at Memorial Park Cemetery, Rock Island, where military honors will be presented by Moline American Legion Post 246. Visitation is 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Memorial Christian Church, Moline, or Rock Island VFW Post 1303.

Dick was born Jan. 31, 1926, in Webbs Cross Roads, Ky., son of Dewey and Agnes Benedict Beane. He attended schools in Cincinnati, Ohio, and moved to Rock Island in 1940, graduating from Rock Island High School in 1944. Dick served in World War II with the U.S. Army 86th Infantry Division from 1944-1947. He attended Purdue University after his return from the war.

In early years, he was employed by the Iowa/Illinois Bus Line and Swift and Co. Dick joined the Rock Island Fire Department in 1956 and served for 28 years. He was assistant fire chief at the time of his retirement in 1984. He was a member of the Rock Island Fire Department from 15 Oct 1956 - 21 Oct 1984.

He married Loretta "Lou" Reddick on April 27, 1956, in Rock Island. She died Dec. 7, 2002. Dick married Peggy Keller on Oct. 28, 2007, in Rock Island.

He was a member of Memorial Christian Church, Moline, the Rock Island Retired Firefighters Association, Trio Lodge 57 A.F. & A.M., Rock Island, and Moline American Legion Post 246. Dick was also a member of the Seminole Elks Lodge, Rock Island Moose Lodge 190, Rock Island Eagles Airee 956 and the Friends Circle Club, Moline.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy; stepdaughters, Shana (Kurt) Schindler, Davenport, Wendy (Jeff) Renner, Cuba, Mo.; adopted daughter, Pam (Dick) Yakovich, Rock Island; six stepgrandchildren; sister, Joann (Donald) Young, Rock Island; sisters-in-law, Barbara Lamson, Corpus Christi, Texas, Kay (Ed) Keller, Largo, Fla.; brother-in-law, Marvin (Susan) Keller, Illinois City; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Loretta; brother, Harold; and sister, Evelyn.

The family wishes to extend their thanks to Trinity Rock Island 4 North and Trinity Pathway Hospice, Bettendorf, for the compassion and loving care shown Dick during his illness.
