As a young lawyer, Gregg served a term as a state representative in 1854. He then served as a prosecuting attorney for the Fourth Circuit till 1861.

A Southern Unionist, Gregg next served as a commander in the Fourth Arkansas Cavalry (Federal). Following the war, Gregg returned to his practice law. Gregg dedicated a year to serving as chancellor of the chancery circuit court for Pulaski County.

The location of Arkansas Industrial University in Fayetteville is accredited to the efforts of Gregg.
He served on the University's board of trustees from 1874-83. The famed 'Old Main' building was constructed under Gregg's time of overseeing the building on campus.

Gregg served the state Supreme Court as an associate justice, remaining on the bench until 1874. He was the unsuccessful 1889 Republican candidate for Arkansas's governor.

In 1889, became the President of the Bank of Fayetteville. He moved on to the chairmanship of the state banking association in 1891.

Gregg was helping prepare the Arkansas's World's Fair exhibit for 1893 in Chicago.
