Artist. A celebrated Chicago, Illinois-born painter, for three decades his clashing neon colors and freakish appearing subjects brought new life to Pop Art. First solo exhibition in Chicago was held in 1970; four years later he held his first show in Paris, at the Darthea Speyer Gallery; they continued to represent him to the end. He became well known in the late 1960s with a group of funky Chicago fantasts known as Imagists and remained at the center of that movement. He was the most traditional of them with his work grounded in realism; his early vision was at once startling, threatening and freakish, but still the work of an urban realist.
