Artist. He is internationally renowned and revered as one of the greatest realist painters of the 20th century. Like most geniuses, he was a controversial eccentric who was a deliberate enigma and self-styled recluse with only very rare contact with the public. The French-born, Polish artist died at his chateau in a small village near Gstaad, Switzerland, from lengthy respiratory illness.
