Historian. She is best known for her work "The Guns of August", which chronicled the opening days of World War I. Published in 1962, the book received much critical acclaim, and became a best seller, garnering Barbra Tuchman the Pulitzer Prize for general non-fiction. In 1970 she published "Stillwell and the American Experience in China", a biography of United States Army General Joseph "Vinegar Joe" Stillwell. It too was received with critical plaudits, and won her a second Pulitzer Prize. Her other works include "The Proud Tower" (1962), "A Distant Mirror" (1978) and "The March of Folly: From Troy to Vietnam" (1984).
