Published in 1962, the book received much critical acclaim, and became a best seller, garnering Barbra Tuchman the Pulitzer Prize for general non-fiction. In 1970 she published "Stillwell and the American Experience in China", a biography of United States Army General Joseph "Vinegar Joe" Stillwell. It too was received with critical plaudits, and won her a second Pulitzer Prize. Her other works include "The Proud Tower" (1962), "A Distant Mirror" (1978) and "The March of Folly: From Troy to Vietnam" (1984).
