Author, Poet. Born in Wimbledon, London, England, he attended Charterhouse School, St. John's College and Cambridge University. During the First Word War (WWI), he served as a Captain in the Royal Welch Fusiliers. He was seriously wounded at the Somme in 1916 and reported dead. During his recovery, he published two collections of poetry, 'Over the Brazier' (1916) and 'Fairies and Fusiliers' (1917). In 1925, he was appointed professor of English literature at Cairo University in Egypt. In 1927, he published 'Lawrence and the Arabs,' which became a commercial success. He wrote his account of the First World War, 'Goodbye To All That' (1929) to critical acclaim. After a move to Majorca, Spain, he produced what are probably his most noted works, 'I, Claudius' and 'Claudius the God' published in 1934. His 'Collected Poems' followed in 1938, the same year the novel 'Count Belisarius ' appeared. He returned to England in 1939, publishing such works as 'Sergeant Lamb's America' (1940); 'Wife to Mr. Milton: The Story of Marie Powell' (1943) and 'The Golden Fleece' (1944). In 1946, he returned to Spain, eventually publishing both scholarly and commercial works such as 'The White Goddess: A Historical Grammar of Poetic Myth' (1948); 'The Isles of Unwisdom' (1949); 'The Greek Myths' (2 vol, 1955); 'Greek Gods and Heroes' (1960); and 'The Siege and Fall of Troy' (1962). Between 1961 and 1966, he was a Professor of Poetry at Oxford. He refused a CBE that year, stating he did not agree with the British honors system. Beginning in the 1970s, he began to suffer from memory loss, curtailing his ability to write; that decade he published several collections of poetry, and by 1975 he had published in total more than 140 works. His last publication was the novel, 'An Ancient Castle' (1980).
