Leonard Goetz
Manawa lost a prominent member of the community on Monday, Jan. 10, 1994, when Leonard Goetz passed away at Appleton Medical Center.
He was born Oct. 2, 1908 in Manawa, the son of Frank and Mary (Zettle) Goetz and was a life resident of Manawa. As a boy he worked with
his father at their blacksmith shop and later at the Goetz tire shop. He served two years in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theatre.
On Jan. 28, 1947, he married Evelyn Kostrzak. He was appointed Postmaster in Manawa in 1953, retiring in 1975. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where he served as secretary and later as treasurer for many years.
He was a charter member of the Manawa Lions Club, recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellowship award, and served as chariman of the lions rodeo parade committee for 31 years.
He was the last active charter member of the Manawa Lions Club with 65 years of service. Leonard was a stabilizing force in our clib, which helped us to grow and serve those in the community and on the international level. He was dedicated in everything he did, wheather in the church, library, lions club or community, said DuWayne Carl, past lions District Governor.
Wayne Heiman, Lions vice president, said "Leonard always quietly went on with his duties on the lions community calendar and as rodeo parade chairman. He was such a fixture in the lions club. His dedication, service, and regular attendance was a reminder of what we can all so if we follow the lion motto, "we Serve"
He had been a scout leader and a member and chairman of the library board for many years. Bobin Glocke, past Sturm Public librarian, commented, He always made sure to remind the community of what a good library we had. He was well in tune with the community and knew what was needed and how to make it better. For example, he was the library board member who wanted to take out the vault in the library and make more room for the future. Hw always encouraged the board to make changes and provide better services."
He was a member of American Legion and the DAV, and treasurer of the local Salvation Army. He was a former member of the Village Board and served on the Community chest.
Rolland Handrich, life-time friend, and Little Wolf cemetery Association secretary-treasurer said, I kew Leonard all my life, He and I shared cemetery duties for over 30 years; he on the Sacred Heart Cemetery Association, and I on the Little Wolf Cemetery Association. We worked very closely together and he was the most pleasant, and efficient person I've ever known. I will miss him very much.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn; four children: Wanda (John) Roever, Slinger, Thomas Goetz, Appleton, James (Nancy) Goetz, Slat Lake City, Utah, Kathy Larson, La Crosse; seven grandchidren: Mary and Peter Roever, Theresa Goetz, Christopher, Nickolas, Andrew and Julie Goetz; two brothers: Lawrence Goetz, Fort Wayne Ind., and Edward (Marguerite) Goetz, Milwaukee.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister Theresa.
The funeral was held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Jan 13, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Manawa, with Fr. Cyril Dickrell, Fr. Norman Krutzik and Fr. Gerald Goetz celebrating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery in the spring.
Memorials to the Library Furnishing fund will be appreciated.
