African Elephant. She was the oldest African elephant in United States captivity at age 55. The ailing female elephant was found sprawled on the floor of her indoor habitat and was euthanized by veterinarians when she couldn’t be revived. The Chicago zoo acquired Peaches and two other African elephants, Tatima and Wanki, from the San Diego Zoo in 2003. Tatima age 35, died in October 2004, leaving Wanki age 36, as the sole remaining African elephant at the Lincoln Park Zoo. Animal rights activists; People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals are campaigning to relocate remaining animals to the Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, Tennessee.
