African Elephant. Before arriving at the San Francisco Zoo in 1962, this African-born elephant was one of the youthful elephant stars in the John Wayne film "Hatari." Activists for animals rights had been fighting to have San Francisco Zoo elephants moved to The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee which provides better health and wildlife conditions. She was 43 years of age and the second elephant to die at the zoo in less than two months.
