Air Force Capt Archuleta was assigned to the 41st Rescue Squadron, Moody Air Force Base, Georgia. The day before she was to return from Afghanistan, Archuleta was on a mission to rescue two children in a medical emergency. Her helicopter slammed into a mountain 10 feet from its summit killing everyone onboard. At the age of 7, Tamara announced her intention to become the country's first female president. At 20, she became the first female University of New Mexico ROTC graduate to earn her pilot's wings. She was to be married this past June and leaves behind a 3 year old son from a previous marriage. Tamara was a community kid – Girl Scouts and third degree black belt in karate. Days before she died, she wrote to a third grade pen pal, "This is how we show the Afghanistan people that we care."
