**In July, 2004, Michael's elementary school, Veteren's Elementary School, was renamed in his honor. It is now SSG Michael P. Barrera Veteran's Elementary School.**

Michael was one of two soldiers that died when their tank was attacked in Iraq. The third soldier was wounded. Their tank was hit, fell on its side and then went down a 35 foot embankment. They were on their way to a guard post in Tikrit when they were attacked.

Michael joined the Army after his graduation from Somerset High School in 1995. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion of the 67th Armor Regiment out of Fort Hood.

According to his mother, Hilda Guardiola, Michael loved his job in the Army and loved serving his country. He was to come home in 2 weeks for the holidays. His mother stated that she had purchased red, white and blue decorations for this year's Christmas tree. She will still be putting up the decorations in honor of her son.

Michael was 26 years old.

Michael is survived by his parents, Gabriel and Hilda Guardiola; sister, C'Lina Mares; fiance, Denielle Delle Donne and her children, Patricia and Samual Delle Donne; grandmother, Rosa Maria Guardiola; aunt, Alicia Medina; as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
