A resolution on December 20, 1920, introduced by Congressman Hamilton Fish, Jr., of New York, called for the return of an unknown soldier killed in France. A Memorial Amphitheater in Arlington National Cemetery was constructed. Four bodies of unknown soldiers were selected in France from the cemeteries of Aisne-Marne, Meuse-Argonne, Somme and St. Mihiel and were taken to the Hotel de Ville. From those those four brave men who lie in their caskets, one was chosen on October 24, 1921 by Sergeant Younger. He circled the caskets three times and then lay down a spray of white roses on the chosen coffin, the third one from the left. On November 9, 1921 the flag-draped coffin arrived in D.C. at the Navy Yard and was escorted to the rotunda of the Capitol where he lay in State under guard. He was laid to rest on November 11, 1921, Armistice Day. Since that day, one unknown soldier has been laid to rest in the tomb to represent the missing or unidentified soldiers of World War II, the Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam War.
