On Thursday, March 11, 2004, ten bombs exploded on four packed early-morning commuter trains in Madrid, killing 191 people and leaving at least 1,800 injured. Immediately after the attacks the Spanish government named the Basque separatist group ETA as the main suspect. On March 14th a video claiming responsibility for the attacks was discovered. The video, purporting to be from Al-Qaeda's military spokesman in Europe, said the attacks were revenge for Spain's collaboration with America. The week after the bombings Spain's Socialist Party won a surprise victory in the country's general election, after voters turned on the government over its handling of the Madrid attacks.
