Montreal Overpass Collapse Kills Five, Police Say (Update2)

By Reg Curren

Oct. 1 (Bloomberg) -- Five people were killed after a section of a Montreal overpass

collapsed yesterday onto a road below and crushed two vehicles under tons of concrete, Quebec Provincial Police said.

Rescue workers today removed the cars, flattened to about 45 centimeters (18 inches) in height, police spokesman Jayson Gauthier said in a telephone interview. Six people were injured, three of them critically.

The cars were recovered around 2:30 a.m. local time and police removed them to a government garage to conduct a search of the vehicles, Gauthier said.

``It was a quick death,'' police spokeswoman Chantal Mackels said. ``The concrete fell on the cars, which were really, really crushed. I don't think they felt any pain.''

The collapse happened around 12:40 p.m. on the Concorde Boulevard overpass above Highway 19, one of several roads that connect the island of Montreal to Laval, Quebec. Two large cranes were brought in to remove the rubble and assist more than 100 emergency workers who responded to the collapse.

Mario St-Pierre, a spokesman for Quebec's Transport Department, said yesterday motorists had reported debris on the roadway below the overpass about one hour before the collapse and the government had issued an advisory.

He said a work crew investigated the report and found concrete on the highway, though there was no indication that the overpass, built in 1970, was about to collapse.

Manon Joly, who was approaching the overpass when it fell, told reporters in an interview broadcast on Radio-Canada television: ``The whole thing crumbled like a house of cards. I was really scared. There was a motorcycle in front of me and that's what saved me. Had it not been there I would have fallen in the hole.''

Mackels said three Laval residents died: Gilles Hamel, 44; his brother, Jean-Pierre, 40; and Line Beaudet, a 40-year-old woman. She didn't disclose the names of the two other victims.

LAVAL, Quebec (AP) - An overpass near Montreal collapsed on Saturday, with TV reports saying at least five people were injured when their vehicles were trapped by falling concrete.

``The overpass collapsed,'' eyewitness Golda Simon told all-news TV station RDI. ``There were two cars on the overpass that ended on Papineau Bridge, and the two cars are upside down.''

``Everyone braked, everyone stopped and that's when we saw the two cars,'' she added.

One witness described chunks of cement coming off the overpass.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene on Highway 19 in Laval, just north of Montreal.
