French Nobility. He was the youngest brother of Kings Louis XVI and Louis XVIII and last of the Bourbon kings of France. Like many younger royal princes, he spent his early life in scandalous dissipation and desultorily pursued a military career. His interest later turned to politics, however, and after his older brother was overthrown and beheaded, became the leading active agent seeking a Bourbon restoration. (His other elder brother, Louis XVIII, was too obese and infirm for the role.) After Napoleon's final overthrow in 1815, the Comte d'Artois (as he was known) led the "more Royalist than the king" faction in French politics. Upon assuming the throne on his brother's death in 1824, Charles was initially popular, but squandered his popularity through a series of clumsy efforts to turn the clock back to pre-1789 days. He was overthrown in the so-called "July Revolution" of 1830 and was succeeded as king by his cousin, Louis-Philippe. Fleeing initially to England, he later moved to continent, settling in Prague and then in present-day Slovenia. He died in the palace of Count Michael Coronini Comberg zu Graffenberg at Goritz, Illyria.
