Aaron Ullom, a 20-year-old U.S. Navy hospital corpsman from Midland who enlisted out of high school, was on his first deployment to Afghanistan. He was killed on a training mission with Afghanistan troops when they were came under fire from insurgents.

When enemy fire came upon his patrol in the Helmond providence of Afghanistan, U.S. Navy Corpsman Aaron D. Ullom ran from cover in a shallow ditch to a Marine who had been wounded. Unfazed, the 20-year-old sailor performed what he was trained to do. While applying a tourniquet to the Marine, lying on top of him above the ditch, Ullom suffered a fatal gunshot wound.

Seaman Ullom was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart.
