My 3rd great Grandma.

"...married Jacob Gerst (Garst, Gherst) on April 8, 1846 in Greensburg, Summit Co., OH. She was the daughter of George Bender and his first wife Catherine Wilhelm (whom George married on March 26, 1797 probably in Donegal Twp., Lancaster Co., PA). On April 7, 1825 in Green Twp, Summit (then Stark) County, Robt Lawson married George Bender to his 2nd wife Catharine Eleanor (Ellen) Smith widow of John Rhodes. George and Ellen had a son John Smith Bender b August 23, 1827 in Wayne Co., OH. John was a tailor in Green, Summit Co., OH (see 1850 census).

"Ellen Smith and John Rhodes (23 Nov 1787 - 16 Sept 1826) had 12 children -- some of whom were: Joel (married Christiana Harter), Elizabeth (married Christian Swartz), Mary (married Jeremiah Crissman), Annie (married Jacob E Bender 1816-1865 son of Jacob Bender and Catharine May), and Margaret Eleanor (married Judge Edwin Bryant Crocker -- became Justice of the Supreme Court of CA)." Mary MacCracken, March 20, 2016.

OBITUARY ~ Mrs. Elizabeth GHERST, maiden name BENDER, was born in Lancaster Co., Pa., August 14, 1817, and died at her home in Wolcottville, Noble Co., IN, January 14, 1894, aged 76 years 5 months (less one day). The subject of this notice moved with her parents to Summit Co., OH, when young. She was married to Jacob GHERST, who died in 1850, leaving her with four small children, three daughters and one son. In 1866 she moved to Indiana, where she lived until the messenger Death called her to her home in heaven. She was converted from sin to God, and united with the Evangelical Association. She was faithful to the last. She leaves two daughters and three sisters to mourn, but they have a good hope of meeting her in heaven. Religious services were held at the house, January 16, 1894, at 10 a.m., after which her remains were laid in the cemetery to rest until the resurrection of the just. T. Carroll.

Many thanks to Colleen Sanders Brown for stone photos.

Originally thought to be the daughter of George & Rosina Elizabeth (Ebert) Bender, this has proved not to be the case. Their Elizabeth (born 1803) married Jacob Altman. I appreciate this updated information from Thomas Boyer < [email protected] >
